How to Pair a Snowboard Helmet and Goggles

A helmet and goggles should work together well enough that you stop thinking about them once you’re riding.

No forehead gap. No goggles getting pushed down your nose. No pressure points. No fighting fog every other run.

The two pieces don’t need to come from the same brand, but the fit between them matters. Here’s what to look for when pairing a snow helmet and goggles.

Why Helmet and Goggle Fit Matters

Your helmet is there to help protect your head. Your goggles protect your eyes from wind, snow, UV exposure, branches, ice chunks, and whatever else ends up coming at your face.

But even good gear can be annoying when the pieces don’t work together.

A bad helmet-and-goggle combination can leave a gap across your forehead, pinch the goggles against your nose, restrict airflow, or create pressure around your temples. Poor airflow between the two can also make fogging worse.

Basically, fit each piece individually, then make sure they still fit properly when you put them together.

Start With the Helmet

Get the Size Right

Measure around the widest part of your head, usually just above your eyebrows and ears, and compare that measurement with the helmet manufacturer’s sizing chart.

A helmet should feel secure without creating painful pressure points. Shake your head around before tightening the chin strap. If the helmet is sliding all over the place, it’s probably too big.

Use the Fit System

A lot of snow helmets use a dial or other adjustable fit system to fine-tune the fit.

Use it.

The goal isn’t to crank the helmet down as hard as possible. You want even contact around your head without one spot taking all the pressure.

Check the Venting

Helmet vents help move heat and moisture away from your head. Some helmets have fixed vents. Others let you open and close them depending on the weather.

Neither system is automatically better. What matters is that the helmet can move enough air for the way you ride and that the vents work reasonably well with your goggles.

Check the Certification

Look for a helmet certified for snow sports, such as ASTM F2040 or CE EN 1077.

Certification doesn’t mean a helmet can prevent every concussion or head injury. No helmet can. It means the helmet has been tested against specific performance requirements for its intended use. ASTM itself notes that helmet protection has limits.

Understand Impact Protection

The foam and shell of the helmet are the foundation of its impact protection. Some helmets also use additional systems designed to help manage energy during certain impacts, including impacts that can create rotational motion.

Different brands approach this differently.

Don’t get too caught up in acronyms. Look at the complete helmet: certification, construction, fit, coverage, additional impact technology, and whether you’ll actually wear it correctly every time you ride.

And if a helmet takes a serious hit, follow the manufacturer’s replacement recommendations. Damage isn’t always obvious from the outside.

Then Fit the Goggles

Frame Size Matters

Goggles come in different frame sizes for a reason.

A small frame can look and feel strange with a large helmet. An oversized frame can get squeezed by a smaller helmet and put pressure on your nose or face.

As a general starting point:

Smaller helmet = smaller or medium goggle frame.
Larger helmet = medium or larger goggle frame.

It’s not a hard rule. Face shape matters too.

The easiest way to know is to try the goggles with the helmet you actually ride in.

Look at the Lens Shape

You’ll generally see cylindrical, spherical, and toric lenses.

Cylindrical lenses curve horizontally but are relatively flat vertically. They usually have a lower-profile look.

Spherical lenses curve horizontally and vertically, creating a more rounded shape.

Toric lenses sit somewhere between the two, using a tighter vertical curve and wider horizontal curve.

One shape isn’t automatically clearer than another. Lens quality, construction, coatings, and the optical design of the specific goggle matter more than simply choosing cylindrical versus spherical.

Pick the shape that gives you good visibility and fits your face and helmet properly.

Choose the Lens for the Light

Lens tint matters more than matching your jacket.

Darker lenses generally make more sense in bright conditions, while lighter lenses allow more light through when it’s stormy, overcast, or flat.

If you regularly ride through changing conditions, having a second lens is useful. Quick-change and magnetic lens systems make swaps easier, but they aren’t necessary for a good goggle.

Pay attention to the lens's VLT — Visible Light Transmission — if the manufacturer lists it. Higher VLT lets more light through. Lower VLT blocks more of it.

Anti-Fog Matters

Most decent snow goggles use some combination of ventilation, dual-lens construction, and an anti-fog treatment.

That doesn’t make them impossible to fog.

Blocking the vents, putting wet goggles on your forehead, overdressing, or trapping warm humid air inside the frame can still cause problems.

Good airflow helps more than constantly wiping the lens.

How to Tell If Your Helmet and Goggles Actually Match

Put them on together.

That sounds obvious, but this is where most compatibility problems show up.

Check the Forehead Gap

The top of the goggle should meet the helmet reasonably closely.

You don’t need to obsess over getting a mathematically perfect seal, but a huge strip of exposed forehead usually means the shapes or sizes aren’t working together.

On the other end, the helmet shouldn't push hard enough against the goggles that they get forced down your face.

Look at the Shape

The top edge of the goggle should follow the general shape of the helmet opening.

Some combinations line up naturally. Others clearly don’t.

If you have to force the two pieces together, try another frame.

Check the Sides

Make sure the helmet isn’t crushing the sides of the goggle frame into your temples.

You want enough room for the foam to sit against your face the way it was designed to.

Check the Strap

Most modern goggle straps are designed to work around the outside of a snow helmet.

A silicone grip on the inside of the strap can help keep it from sliding around, and many helmets have a rear goggle clip or keeper.

Once everything is on, move your head around. Your goggles shouldn't migrate halfway down your face.

Taking Care of Your Helmet and Goggles

Good gear gets pretty gross. That’s normal. Take care of it anyway.

Goggles

Use a clean microfiber cloth or the bag supplied with the goggles.

Be especially careful with the inside of the lens. Many goggles have an anti-fog coating there that can be damaged by aggressive wiping.

If the inside gets covered in snow or moisture, shake out what you can and let it dry. If you absolutely need to touch it while you’re out riding, dab gently rather than scrubbing it back and forth.

Store goggles in their bag when you're not using them. Throwing them loose into a gear bin with tools, bindings, boots, and everything else is a pretty efficient way to destroy a lens.

Helmet

Let the helmet dry completely after riding.

If the liner or ear pads are removable, follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions rather than throwing the whole helmet into a washing machine and hoping for the best.

Check the shell, foam, straps, buckle, and fit system periodically for damage.

If you've taken a significant impact, inspect the helmet carefully and check the manufacturer's replacement guidance.

A Few Things That Make the Setup Better

Run a thin layer under your helmet. A thin balaclava or helmet liner can add warmth without completely changing the way the helmet fits.

Carry the right spare lens. If you start the day in sun and finish in a storm, a low-light lens sitting in the car isn't doing much for you.

Keep your vents clear. Snow packed into the top of the goggles or helmet can shut down airflow quickly.

Don't over tighten everything. A helmet and goggle combination shouldn't need to be painfully tight to stay put.

Fit the whole setup before you ride. Helmet. Goggles. Balaclava if you use one. Put everything on together before deciding whether the fit actually works.

What Actually Matters

Pairing a snow helmet and goggles isn't complicated.

The helmet needs to fit your head correctly. The goggles need to fit your face. And when you put the two together, they should not have a gap and neither should screw up the fit of the other. 

Start with safety and fit. Then look at ventilation, lens choice, visibility, and features that actually matter for how and where you ride.
